The type 99, also known asZTZ-99 and WZ-123, developed from the Type 98G (in turn, a development of theType 98), is a third generation main battle tank (MBT) fielded by the ChinesePeople's Liberation Army. It is made to compete with other modern tanks.Although not expected to be acquired in a large numbers due to its high costcompared to the more economical Type 96, it is currently the most advanced MBTfielded by China. The ZTZ99 MBT is a successorto the Type 98G tank manufactured for the People's Liberation Army (PLA).Following the completion of the Type 98, research into improved versions of thetank continued within the Chinese government. These programs produced the Type98G, a refined iteration of the Type 98 with a better reliability record. Atthe end of 2001, the first batch of 40 Type 98G tanks entered service with theregular Army. The Type 98G eventually gave rise to what is now known as theType 99, which was officially revealed by the government in 2001. The finalversion of the Type 99 included a 1500-horsepower engine, as opposed to itsimmediate predecessor's 1200 horsepower power train. Also added were a leopard2A5-style sloped-arrow armor plate on the front of the turret, and additionalcomposite armor layers on the sides.The Type 99A is the latestversion in service of the PLA. The Type 99A has its turret top reshaped, havingthe hump on the turret's removed by thickening it.
